Rachin Ravindra was born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand to Indian origin parents in Bengaluru. His father Ravi Krishnamurthy, a software architect, migrated to New Zealand in 1997 and loved cricket and used to play club level cricket in Bengaluru before shifting to Wellington. Rachin himself has been inspired about the game by his father who loved playing golf.
Here, the family’s Indian origin was an influence on Rachin’s cricket career. Besides, his father used to visit Bengaluru quite often and Rachin used to go along with him to play club cricket in India, which gave him a good grounding of subcontinental wickets at a young age.
Interestingly, Rachin’s name is a portmanteau, a blend of two legendary cricketers: It has a combination of two famous Indian Cricketers clearly pronounced as ‘Rahul Dravid’ and ‘Sachin Tendulkar; We get ‘Ra’ from Rahul and ‘chin’ from Sachin.
He also came clean that despite the fact that he later required his father to admit paternity, he never wished for Rachin to be a cricketer but he unabashedly stated that the name was an accidental one. Rachin developed interest in cricket at a very young age Of 5 and he proved his worth potential by playing age level cricket and under 19 New Zealand team.
Before joining the senior team, Rachin came to the limelight at the global level when he represented the under-19 team in New Zealand in two consecutive ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cups, 2016 and 2018. He was regarded a future star for the New Zealand cricket after performing well in the 2018 tournament. Subsequently, Rachin made his way through New Zealand’s domestic grades after his under 19 achievement.
In 2021, Rachin made his international debut for New Zealand in a T20 International against Bangladesh. Later that year, he made his Test debut against India in Kanpur. Although he didn’t have a particularly successful debut series, his determined 91-ball 18* helped New Zealand secure a draw against India in the final innings, showcasing his grit and tenacity.
New Zealand had no plans for Rachin Ravindra for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India but Williamson’s and Bracewell’s injuries provided the opportunity for Ravindra.
Originally considered an On-Slot batsman and occasional bowler, Rachin grabbed his chance and emerged as one of the stars of the tournament. He came into the limelight on the world stage in the ICC world cup playing against the Englishmen where he took on the defending champions scoring a breathtaking 123* from 96 balls at the largest cricket stadium of the world in Ahmedabad.
What made this innings even more special is that the hundred came in just 82 balls, which is the fastest World Cup hundred by a New Zealand player and he became only the fourth Kiwi to score a hundred on debut World Cup.
His brilliant innings made the difference for New Zealand, as they beat England to take revenges for the loss in the 2019 final. Rachin played a great tournament throughout, making three hundreds and amassing 578 runs to make the record of most runs by a player in a world cup on debut.
He aggregated a total of 349 runs, contributed centuries against both Australia and Pakistan and was among the most prolific scorer of the cup. Due to his brilliant performances, he got the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2023 Award.
Rachin’s perfect stroke play and correct technique mainly especially against spin has seen him developed through his stint in India. Rachin is a left-arm orthodox spinner, and Vettori has been a very important inspiration when it comes to bowling style.
He is a useful addition to the New Zealand team, and they benefit from his flexibility in that he can come in at different positions in the batting line and be an opener.
Rachin first represented New Zealand in Test cricket in 2021 but only announced himself in the format in February 2024. In the home series against South Africa, the Kiwi stroked a mammoth 240 in the first test to have his first test ton. At that time it was considered as the highest maiden Test century for New Zealand and the knock also made him a certainty in the team both as a batsman and a bowler.
IPL Career Rachin Ravindra rose to fame because of his World Cup campaign, and subsequently, IPL franchises showed interest in him; CSK bought him for INR 1.8 crores in December 2023 to play for the 2024 season. His first IPL was in March 2024, where the world was taken by his aggression while batting and also spin bowling.
While Rachin Ravindra plays for New Zealand, he is of Indian descent and could not be more proud of it. His father hails from Bengaluru and was instrumental in shaping his cricketing career while Rachin travelled several times to India in his tender age to play club cricket. Both his grandparents live in Bengaluru, so during the 2023 World Cup, he personally felt how great it was to play in India, and chant his name. Rachin’s passion toward the sport, client, flexibility, and manner when interacting with various conditions reveal his humble approach to the game and commitment towards refining himself.
Rachin Ravindra’s beautiful girlfriend, Premila Morar, is a fabulous New Zealand fashion designer based in Pukekohe. The couple has allegedly been dating for more than three years, even though Ravindra spends most of his time as a professional cricketer. Morar is always supportive and they occasionally post snippets of their relationship on social media.
Morar, has been always there by his side especially during his highs and lows of his cricket career, IPL inclusive. This proves how close they are; she supported and encouraged him all throughout.
Rachin Ravindra is expected to gross about $2 million (INR 16 crore) all through his career. From his cricketer profession, he earns most of his finances. Having begun his career in volleyball lately, Ravindra’s earnings are expected to increase for the more season he plays.
Salary:
Rachin Ravindra earns his income from match fees and appearances in domestic leagues. Since he is not a regular squad member for New Zealand, he does not have a central contract with New Zealand Cricket. However, he receives match fees, earning approximately:
$10,000 per Test match
$4,000 per ODI
$2,000 per T20I
Ravindra’s total estimated annual income from these matches is something like $130, 000. Chennai Super Kings a professional cricket team based in Chennai also snapped him up when he was inducted to play for his first IPL season in 2024.
He has been able to sign a deal of INR 1.8 crore which would his compensation on per season with the CSK.
Brand Endorsement: Rachin Ravindra needs more brand sponsorships since the promising cricketer only debuted in professional cricket at a young age. He currently endorses DSC, an Indian based cricket equipment manufacturing industry; reports of his earnings from endorsement are however undisclosed by the public.
Investments and Properties: To date, there is no record on the public domain in regard to Ravindra’s personal investment portfolio or any real estate tender. Though he has connections to Bangalore, India, he was born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand, his parents moving there before his birth.
Rachin Ravindra was baptized as an international cricket player and he has been an overnight sensation at that. Being a technically sound batsman with left arm spin as well as the capability to grab moments under tense situation he is expected to be instrumental for New Zealand across all formats. He made much of his progress in the 2023 World Cup and IPL, which will make of New Zealand cricket’s future leader. Having so much ahead of him at the incredible age of 24, Rachin Ravindra has experienced much success. The journey he is undertaking is bound to resonate with young cricketers especiallys those from mixed origins like him being a product of both Indian and Kiwi culture.
