The upcoming Tamil film “Amaran” has been creating waves ever since its promo release. Directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and produced by cinematic legends Kamal Haasan, R. Mahendran, and Sony Pictures International Productions, the film promises to be a heartfelt portrayal of love, courage, and patriotism. Starring Sivakarthikeyan as Major Mukund Varadarajan and Sai Pallavi as his wife, Indhu Rebecca Varghese, “Amaran” is more than just a movie—it’s a homage to a national hero whose sacrifice continues to inspire millions.
The promo sets an emotional tone, beginning with a scene where Indhu receives the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration, in the presence of global leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former U.S. President Barack Obama. As the medal is awarded, Indhu transforms into Sai Pallavi, symbolizing the indomitable spirit and resilience of a woman who stood strong in the face of immense personal loss.
Commissioned lieutenant after passing out from the Officers Training Academy and has under gone rapid promotion owing to hard work and dare devilry. He experienced a number of important posts in the military which include the United Nations Mission in Lebanon and the Infantry School in Madhya Pradesh. This paper proves the valor, commitment and sacrifice to one’s country by presenting Major Mukund Varadarajan’s story. Mukund Varadarajan was an officer in the Indian Army of Rajput Regiment, born on April 12, 1983 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Major Singh was awarded the country’s highest peacetime gallantry award – the Ashoka Chakra in his honorable mention after sacrificing his life a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014.
Major Mukund Varadarajan was posted in 2014 with the 44 Rashtriya Rifles, a dedicated battalion of the Indian army to fight insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. On April 25, he spearhead an anti-terrorist operation in a village in South Kashmir which was a hotbed of terrorists. This operation meant that there were Hizbul Mujahideen militants in large numbers wielding spike grenades, more than fifteen minutes away from the district headquarters, and unarmed apart from their .303 rifles. As soon as the team drew near the hideout the militants opened fire on them with honed precision. Mukund meanwhile quickly shifted his men to a place which offered little chance to the enemy to attack. He was intelligent in giving directions and those gave his team the upper hand over the insurgents. Mukund, along with his buddy Sepoy Vikram Singh, advances to an orchard under fire so that they could close in with the terrorists position. Two militants were killed on board including a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander and Mukund was critically injured by bullets. Though wounded during the attack he remained in the frontline with his comrades and made sure that the surrounding was swept clean of marauding terrorists.
Major Mukund was cool and composed throughout the incident even after being shot severally. Even in his state and despite being shot in the chest and tummy the officers said Mukund was full of life as they arrested him. When I managed to neutralize the terrorists, Mukund fell on the floor injured. He was hurried to the hospital for medivac and was anounced dead before he could arrive at the hospital.
In 2015, Major Mukund Varadarajan was honored with the Ashok Chakra after his death because of his great leadership, bravery, and hard work. Indhu Rebecca Varghese wife of late Major Mukund Varadarajan was accepted the award on behalf of her husband from the President of India. The story of Mukund has been a sign or moving wall of the summer of the Indian Armed Forces against terrorism. The soldier’s courage is an inspiration to many as citizens not only in the military services but across the country. Shivakarthikeyan starrer Amaran, which is a biopic of the brave CRPF officer, also seals the legend and service delivered by the hero.
This film paying homage to Major Mukund Varadarajan an unsung brave heart and also gives glimpses of his family – wife Indhu and a young daughter. His story is actually a further reminder that the supreme price is paid not only by all the soldiers but also by close relatives as well. Major Mukund was in the 44th Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu & Kashmir on deputation in 2014 when he led an important anti-terrorism operation in Shopian. Show excellent leadership skills and bravery, the guy and his subordinates neutralized three of the best HIJBU terrorists.
Unfortunately, he received severe injuries during the operation and eventually, he was unable to recover from those injuries. His deeds helped save numerous people and dealt a heavy blow to terrorism in the region as well. The core component of this movement called Laal Rang in the film Udta Punjab FM 90 True Story due to his bravery he was awarded Ashok Chakra Póstumo. Before handing over his supreme act of martyrdom, Major Mukund successfully had shown leadership skills knowledge and exercise of raw courage planning besides marshaling out swift actions by which he neutralized three most wanted Hizbul Mujaheddin terrorists.
In the backdrop of this brave soldier was a woman and nobody lesser than Indhu Rebecca Varghese. This couple has a college strory, Mukund and indhu, the couple got married on 28 august 2009. They were the clichéd couple and their love story was well etched by respect and identical visions. With each other, they blessed with a daughter, Arshea, on March 17, 2011. Major Mukund Varadarajan’s wife Indhu Rebecca Varghese made his a lot in his life and ensures that his memory transforms into existence. The both couple had a good understanding of each other and cared for the other as they cherished each other.
Mukund and Indhu were married and they had a daughter, Arshea. Indhu never complained of being a soldier’s wife despite the difficulties of marriage to such a man; instead she stood by Mukund during his formidable tests. The couple’s bond had good handle of feelings, as Mukund had to be away on army assignments for relatively long time. Marriage and the army are things that go together often making it hard for a soldier’s wife to know when her husband is safe or in danger. But Indhu accepted all these challenges with a lot of grace. When she was asked in several interviews she mentioned that she was always aware of the danger of Mukund’s job but she never felt ashamed of him as he was so committed and loyal to his country.
The young couple was dreaming only about the future when, in 2014, Major Mukund Varadarajan died during the counter-terrorism operation, leaving Indhu and their four-year-old daughter Arshea. Like others wives in army, Indhu was doomed to face severe reality of losing husband for an unexpected event. His young son Mukund died and brought vacuum in their family but Indhu has been very strong and has carried his memories for their daughter and for the nation.
During the Ashok Chakra award ceremony, where Mukund was posthumously honored, Indhu received the award on his behalf from the President of India. Dressed in a simple sari, she stood tall, embodying the pride and pain that comes with being the wife of a fallen soldier. Her composure during the ceremony touched many, and she became a symbol of the quiet courage and resilience of military families.
After Mukund passes away for the next few years, Indhu has remained loyal to his memory. Whenever she is narrating the story she tries to explain that Mukund was not only a bravery soldier, but he was a husband and a father . Rich experience of Indhu in managing all her responsibilities despite surviving alone for their daughter as well as remembering Mukund on daily basis has set exemplary for many people. She also underscores that she narrates Mukund’s stories to their little daughter Arshea who was an infant when Mukund died. Indhu has provided for Arshea the information about her father’s courage, his actions for his daughter, the values with which the man lived. , a family of distinctive steel. Major Mukund Varadarajan began a first-born son in a very conservative family, oriented on education and service. His parents, Varadarajan and Geetha, were thrilled and could not be more proud when we spoke to them. Mukund’s father Varadarajan who worked in a bank was very much impacted by it and focused towards rendering responsibility towards the nation. The mother of the boy, Geetha talked a lot with him and she is still holding all the beautiful memories about his childhood and also the way he became a responsible and brave officer. Even now, years after Mukund’s death Indhu, Mukund’s parents, and his other close relatives pay tributes to Mukund in their own ways. The two remain the backbone and uphold each other during the mournings as they bury a man who pushed himself to work for the country.
I believe that Indhu’s message to the rest of the world is simple: to embrace hope and fight all the odds. She also feels that Mukund who will leave the house will never be back, but the memories and celebrating his life should be kept. In the movie she often talks about how proud she is of her husband’s courage and the role of standing by the families of the martyrs of the nation.
In an interview, she expressed: “My husband was a hero, not only he fought for the nation but also showed the humanity. He was, and always remained polite, kind, and self-sacrificing throughout his life for his family members, or his military subordinates. I want to give my daughter some information about who her father was, what kind of man he might be and never let her feel ashamed of her father. This side of the soldier’s sacrifice is brought to life by Indhu Rebecca Varghese’s strength, dignity, and dedication to her family and in remembering Mukund. She remains popular an icon not only for military families but for the entire nation drawn to her courage. Before Indhu heard about Mukund’s martyrdom she remained a brave woman and showed great strength after being notified about it. On national television, she stated: “Today, what the country needs to see is the man he was, not the woman who grieves” Her words were not only those of the grieving wife but the woman who knew her husband and all he stood for. I always find Indhu brave and enduring which makes me remember the unsung portions of armed force families.
Indhu penned a heartfelt poem in memory of her husband:
There lived a man who loved me with all his heart
There lived a man who fathered my child
There lived a man who believed in integrity
There lived a man who loved his profession
There lived a man who never feigned to be a hero
There lived a man who was my soul
There lived a man with a heart full of generosity
There lived a man who revealed all to me
There lived a man who loved me with his life.
But… now I wait.
For he is with God…
I know this for sure
One day I will meet him
I know this for sure
And he will give me that warm strong hug of his
I know this for sure
And I will not complain that I can’t breathe
I know this for sure
You can hug me… hug me all you want.
— Indhu Rebecca Varghese
