Started in Bengaluru on a small scale, Roy created an empire worth more than 8,400 crores and left a name in the real estate and entertainment industry of India. However, his sudden demise in January 2026 was a shock to India and the business world in general, and it begs the question of how strenuous a high-profile entrepreneur is.
Early Life and Influences
CJ Roy was born in Kochi, Kerala and he was introduced to business at a tender age when he was growing up in Bengaluru. His mom contributed significantly to the entrepreneurial attitude. She invested in a small property portfolio, purchasing 30-40 properties, building houses and selling them. When he was young, Roy used to do the accounts and cash flow of these transactions and thus he had first hand experience on how real estate works.

He has a Doctorate in Business Administration, which is a degree awarded to him by SBS Business School, Zurich, which gave him the necessary academic and global insights into his business strategies.
Prior to getting into real estate, Roy served with fortune 500 company Hewlett-Packard and served with BPL and TVS Electronics. This business had taught him about the organization structure and efficiency but his passion was always in the field of entrepreneurship.
The Birth of a Real Estate Empire.
The path of CJ Roy as a branding representative of a corporation to a real estate tycoon started with a radical idea to venture into the unexplored regions and invest in land that was underestimated.
In 2001, with majority of the developers targeting central Bengaluru Roy targeted Sarjapur Road, a serene farmland of acres whose prices were at approximately 6 lakh apiece. People considered the area as a far-away place, but Roy dreamed of a thriving IT hub between Whitefield and Electronic City and expected the flows of IT experts.
Roy had invested in 150200 acres of land along Sarjapur Road despite the objection of family members and company directors. His only supporter was his wife in his bold scheme. This bet came true: the land values in Sarjapur actually rose by almost ten times with time, making Roy a proven prophet of an investor.
In 1991, he established the Confident Group that developed its activities in India, the UAE, and the USA. By March 31, 2025, the group had assets totaling 2,039 crore and it had already finished 159 projects in various sectors such as real estate, education, hospitality and retail. One such viral story was of the first car, a Maruti 800, that he more than 30 years later repurchased presented with a 10-lakh reward to find it. He donated 6M to fund a project to supply water in remote Kerala villages and funded 100 underprivileged individuals free heart surgery operations through the Kerala Muslim Cultural Center (KMCC) UAE. His charity showed that he had more than personal riches in mind when he was pursuing his goals.
Personal Ideology and Social Image.
CJ Roy was a man who zestfully led a life that he did not apologize to anyone. He usually claimed in interviews that life is a party, and he made the talks of the important things amusing and exciting. He studied as a magician, which further made him complex in his personality.

Roy was a bold, confident, and resilient person, who gained him the name of The Embodiment of Confidence. According to colleagues and friends, he was pleasant and friendly and had the capacity to endure tremendous challenges.
Tragic Demise
Even though CJ Roy is successful, his life was a tragedy. Roy had allegedly killed himself in his office at his Richmond Circle, Ashok Nagar, Bengaluru, on January 30, 2026, during Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax raids in numerous premises owned by the Confident Group. It is reported that he was questioned during the raids, and that this could have been a reason behind his distress.
It shocked his friends, family and colleagues with his death. Most people were not able to accept that an outgoing tough guy of a businessman could commit suicide. He is also left behind by his wife, a son and a daughter, who are said to have come back to Bengaluru after the tragedy in Dubai.
He had mentioned in his final interview that he would be quite glad to die any time, which now serves to haunt his acquaintances.
